Woodwork - Mother of Pearl Inlaying The primary materials of these works are prime quality walnut wood and mother of pearls originating from the Red Sea. Once the design of the item to be produced is determined, a block of wood matching the dimensions is cut from a thoroughly dry walnut log that had been stored for at least a year. In mother of pearl inlaying, the first step is the design of the inlay. By using specialized pens, a design is drawn on the wood. These designs are then etched deeper using steel instruments and hammers. The next step is to carefully inlay metal wires along the drawn lines. The metal wires mark the borders inside which the mother of pearl will be inlaid. Next, steel instruments are used to produce the depression framed by the metal wires where the mother of pearl will go. Mother of pearl pieces that are hand measured and hand cut matching these designs are then placed on the wood and glued in. After a day (required for the glue to hold), the wood is treated with acidic solutions which help the wood display its natural wooden design. After another day of waiting, the wood is treated with olive oil.
